Life Cycle

The concept of life is unfathomable
Even on this blue planet where life teems.
Entities of energy. Large and small.
Lives with needs and attachments.
Connections.
Living things seek others; make bonds.
Become close for no definable reason.
Become familiar. Warm. Loyal.
Understanding.
Calm connectedness.
At first he was a warm quivering bundle of fur;
A small dependent being.
Then – though there were no words in common –
A bond grew. A special attachment.
Comprehension.
Some days he was not in the mood
His favourite food no longer favoured.
He was his own chap.
But his chosen humans remain favoured – close.
Consistently.
The bond was there now
Between individual entities of energy
Lives that have become connected
Understanding
Comforting.
Certain bundles of electricity
That have warmed to each other.
Feel good together; sharing space.
Touching. Just being.
Quietly.
How is it that this closeness defines us?
Nurtures us? Comforts us?
Connections so essential to our survival?
Even when we are alone?
Completely.
But this is the cycle of life.
Small short fragile lives.
Something so easily snuffs life out.
In a moment that vibrant personality is gone
He is warm but his eyes are blank.
So you take a spade and dig a rude hole
And place him lovingly in the nurturing earth
Where he will sleep.
Where, in the spring, wild daffodils will bloom
Birds will sing melodiously.
His elements will nurture the alder
Beneath which he lies now.
Replenishing other lives.
Repeating the cycle of new life, love and loss
Which is what it means to be alive.
