Odd blessings
Thursday, 05 December 2019
I ventured out last evening into a crispy starlit Cambridge night to join friends who - like me - love words. Our trusty leader found a delightful exercise where we listed kinds of people, then things you'd find in a kitchen and then creatures. She then shared a poem by Alicia Ostriker and we set about writing our own poems modelled on Ostriker's. Mine tuned out to be rather erotic. Here it is:
The Blessing of the Chef, the Corkscrew and the Orb Spider
To be blessed
said the chef
is to create
such divine tastes
that lovers forget
everything except
what is on their tongues
To be blessed
said the corkscrew
is to drill down
down to that red nectar
twisitng til my very tip
touches the essence
of what the palate desires
To be blessed
said the orb spider
is to build my jungly web
wide between the bamboo
where I wait
for my prey
and my minuscule mate.
