Celebrating birds
Saturday, 19 December 2020
A blackbird was singing.
Perhaps he too was inspired by the rose-red dawn
sumptuous colour reflecting on a damp road.
I stood in the bay
Socially isolated
While the morning star faded
Millions of miles away.
I wandered to the back of our cosy home
Kettle on
Through the window, in the garden
A robin perched
Rounded, insulated from the cold
On guard
Jealous of the long-tailed tits and the great tits and the perky cheeky blue tits
The robin played dog-in-a-manger seeing off all the other birds from our feeder
Albeit briefly
But the blues were too quick and canny for him
They got enough, they all got enough.
Watching their antics lifted my heart
And made me dream of spring.
