Northumberland to Edinburgh

Northumberland
Fair calamitous coast
Endless blue ’til the sea falls off the end of the world
Brooding skies
Sandstone and lava
Dunes and bleeding sunsets
Castles maidens and ghosts
Blood and guts
Swooping gulls with heart-rending calls
Plovers and herons in the bladderwrack
Hermit crabs, cormorants looking pegged out to dry
Cockles and mussels and fish suppers
Fishing boat disasters
Families and land ripped apart by wars
Holy Island; tectonic trauma.
Across the border
English murders
Scottish calamities
Need and greed
Exploitation and inspiration
Curlews’ heartfelt pleas for peace
Flower of Scotland running in my head
Lilting language of lovers
Windswept heather
Cottongrass waving in midsummer breezes
Hawthorn backs bent against the north wind
Dog walkers on mudflats
Fishermen digging for bait
Children running in the shallows
Hostelries and lavish restaurants
Street people, bagpipes
Crags and castles.
